Every February, a small group of high-profile forecasters weigh in with much-anticipated predictions on the length of winter. We’re talking about groundhogs of course! As a country world-famous for its winters, Canada has a team of groundhogs dedicated to making an appearance on the second day of February to see whether or not they will cast a shadow. A shadow augurs six more weeks of winter while no shadow predicts an early spring. This Groundhog Day the news is mixed. Early spring’s ahead, say Balzac Billy in Alberta, Fred la marmotte in Quebec and Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia but Wiarton Willie in the Georgian Bay area begs to differ. He emerged from his burrow and saw his shadow. Good news for skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers everywhere!
