5 Ways to Win at Packing & Moving

Taking your personal items from one home to another is one of the biggest challenges when moving to a new home. To help you get organized and make your next move as simple as possible, we put together a list of ways you can win at packing so you can seamlessly transition into your new space. We look forward to our new Georgian Sands homeowners moving into our community this summer!

1. You Can Never Have Enough Boxes
  • Paper towels
  • Scissors
  • Toothbrush(es) and toothpaste
  • Shower essentials (shampoo, conditioner, soap)
  • Pajamas and clothes for the next day
  • Whatever else you and your family may need!

Your Open First box doesn’t even need to be a box! You can use a laundry hamper or another similar container to hold all your necessary items, this way, you are not using a box you may need for other things.

2. Blankets, Scarves, and Towels—Oh My!

Instead of packing bulky items like towels, blankets, even hoodies and sweaters in boxes or bags, us them to wrap fragile things like glass or serving plates. This way you’re not only safely bundling your glassware, but also saving money and resources that you may have used on materials to pack them. You can also put socks in boots and shoes to help them keep their shape as well as move your socks with less chances of losing a pair.

3. Prepare for Sweet Dreams

One important way to win at packing and moving is to make your bed(s) first! After a long day of unpacking, there is nothing more revitalizing than sleep. You won’t want to be tousling with sheets or attaching headboards after the excitement of a moving day, so make it the first thing you do.

4. What to Do with Cleaning Supplies?

Pack all your cleaning supplies in one labelled box to make for easy tiding. Don’t just include sprays or liquids, but any rags, paper towels, or sponges you may also use. Since moving often comes along with purging any unwanted items, this would be a good opportunity to throw away any worn cleaning brushes or cloths and replace them with new.

5. Plan to Start Early

One of the most effective ways to win at packing and moving is to start early. There are many things to do when moving besides packing that need to be done to ensure a smooth transition. Cleaning your old home, selling off any sellable items, and donating previously loved clothing are all things that if left until the week before your move will become stress-inducing. Check out this moving timeline from Love & Renovations to get an idea of what you should be doing week to week to make your move as easy as possible.
