Interior Design Trends, Tips, and Tricks for 2021

It’s a new year, which means it’s time to take a look at the upcoming design trends for 2021. With so many more people working from home, it’s more important than ever that our interior design is both fashionable and functional. At Georgian Sands, we love experimenting with new looks and features to help our homeowners fully express their sense of style and be inspired to work and play in their space.

2020 was a difficult year for most people, and one of the most marked design trends of 2021 is a return to simpler times. Nostalgia and comfort are in—but that doesn’t mean that bold and fun styles are out! We combed the internet to compile this list of design trends, tips, and tricks for 2021 to help inspire you to put a bit of love into your space.

Styles to look out for:
Grandmillennial Style

A combination of, you guessed it, the simple vibrance of modern Millennial interior design with their grandparent’s design trends. Bold patterned upholstery, antique China, and luxurious woods combine to create something unique and inspired. Grandmillenial style is nostalgic but with a colourful, modern twist!

Cottagecore

Not just a fashion trend, Cottagecore has entered the interior design world. You’ll recognize this design trend by its botanical motifs, cozy textiles, and rustic colour palette. Successfully designed spaces can feel like a grandmother’s cottage from a fairytale—warm, inviting, and full of kitschy ceramics.

Global

The heart wants what it can’t have—with travel plans uncertain in 2021, many people are creating their own vacations at home. Global interior design takes inspiration from distant cities and countries with character.

French Country/Shabby Chic

With the rise of homemade furniture and a desire for more sustainable vintage pieces, French Country has combined with a new variety of Shabby Chic to create something, somehow, more comforting. Imagine classic ornate cast iron, professionally distressed furniture, and rustic elements combined in a luxurious and homey package.

1980s Revival

This TV trend is coming to your living room, literally. A little tacky, a lot vibrant, the 1980s revival represents a change in cultural sensitivities—a desire for fun interior design! Pastel furniture, glass and rounded metal elements, and of course, abstract art are all making a comeback.

Shades and Tones You’ll Love

Each year design experts carefully and masterfully determine their colours of the year to represent the feelings that embody each new year. These colours inspire interior design, fashion, and beyond for the year to come—and sometimes long after. Can’t figure out the perfect look for your living room or your new home office? Check out the various tones below to get inspired by the official colours of 2021!
