5 Ways to Make Work From Home Work For You

At Georgian Sands, our new homes are designed for today’s working families. As more and more companies are becoming remote-first or adopting a hybrid work-office model, a growing amount of people are using their homes as remote offices. In fact, in Canada there’s been a 25% increase in how many people work from home since 2016—and not likely to decrease any time soon.

Homes at Georgian Sands are built with separate rooms to provide ample space for work/life combinations, which is an important part to successfully working from home. There are many benefits to this lifestyle in your day-to-day life, and when you strike the balance of what works best for you, you’re sure to be your most productive self. When your home is designed to complement your lifestyle, working from home can be a breeze!

Read some of our best tips and tricks for working from home to stay productive and enjoy what you do.

Tips for Working from Home

Design a Custom Routine

Consistency is key when working from home! Your pre work routine can be as simple or as complex as you need it to be, but ultimately will help clear your head and prepare you for the rest of your day. This routine will help your mind separate work from home—think of it as your new commute! In the same vein, make a routine for the end of your workday to truly help your brain shut off. This can be a particular work task, like making your to-do list for the next day, or an activity, like taking your dog for a walk.

Plan Your Meals

Try this tip if you find yourself taking a lot of time to put together and decide on your meals throughout your work week. You can meal prep something you love, prepare extras for lunch when making dinner the night before, or try creating a “Ready-To-Eat” list. Consider “Ready-To-Eat” dishes as meals that don’t need to be prepared in an oven or that will take you 15 minutes or less to make. This simple tip will give you extra time during your lunch hour to take a walk or rest instead of worrying about what you’ll eat.

Making a Space for Work

At Georgian Sands, we design homes with ample space for work and play. Whether you have a room with a door that closes or prefer a study nook, there are a few things you can do to make a distinct workspace.

For example:
  • Use a laptop board or a tray for all your daily work items so that you can pack up and put away your things for the day.
  • Pick a particular chair in your home (preferably one that you love) and make it your designated work chair.
  • Set up in a new space every day so that you always have to shut off and put your gear away at the end of the day.

You’re sure to notice a difference in your work/life balance when you create a dedicated workspace that you can step away from at the end of your day.

Schedules, Routines, and Boundaries—Oh My!

Working from home is best when we’re organized and on schedule. It’s important to communicate with your coworkers and family—and to create a space where they can openly communicate with you—about what you need to truly succeed during this time. While you may not be used to communicating that way at first, it will get easier and truly improve your work experience. Practice organization tactics, such as:

  • Scheduling meals, breaks, workout sessions and more into your day. Try including things like, “call a friend” or “take a walk”, so you can actually make time for what’s important.
  • Use the Pomodoro Method if you need to focus on one task or project for a period of time. The act of working continuously and then taking a short break is proven to help productivity. Learn more about this method here.
  • Make your schedule visible to those living with you not only for insight into your day, but also to make it easier to communicate when you may need quiet time, or to coordinate eating together, for example.

Spend Time Outside

It’s more important now than ever, when working from home, that you spend time moving around and getting outside. It will greatly increase your productivity to get out in the fresh air any time of year. One of the major benefits to working from home that Georgian Sands homeowners appreciate is that, unlike working in a traditional office, you can step outside at any moment and enjoy the beautiful natural wonder that is Wasaga Beach.

There are many benefits to adopting a work from home lifestyle. You can spend more time with your family, save money on the commute, and potentially spend more time being active. Remote-first and hybrid workspaces are here to stay for the foreseeable future, and with a few simple tricks and tips, you can be balancing your work/life in no time.
